Previously featured on The Today Show, Oprah and in The New York Times, Rochelle spoke to Vixely on her inspiration for founding The Shirt, her vision for the future of the company and why intelligence in a man is a must!
Vixely (V): What is your company and title?
Rochelle Behrens (RB): I am Founder and CEO of The Shirt by Rochelle Behrens.
V: What is your hometown/ college? Where do you live now?
RB: I grew up in San Diego, CA, and attended the University of Pennsylvania where I double majored in the History of Art and Political Science. Now, I live in Washington, D.C.
V: What made you decide to pursue this path and start your own company?
RB: After years of wearing ill-fitting button down shirts to work at my political job, safety pinning them to stay closed across the bust, I had had enough! If shirts fit across the bust, they were big everywhere else. If they fit everywhere else, they were tight across the bust. It was truly invention born out of necessity. I developed a simple solution to the shirt-gape problem and patented a technology that is now seamlessly designed into our button down shirts, enabling them to fit perfectly everywhere.
V: How do you see The Shirt evolving in the future?
RB: We are always developing and designing new products. We make the best shirts and we will continue to offer more of them, but we will also expand the brand to include a lot of products that our customer craves. Everything that we design is about making her look polished and feel amazing.
V: What sort of women do you try to reach with your brand?
RB: Our customer is an urbane, professional woman. She is always connected, comfortable shopping online, and looking for beautiful clothes that make her feel confident to wear for work and weekend.
V: Favorite public moment involving The Shirt?
RB: Being named “Must Have Fashion Item of the Year” by Oprah Winfrey!
V: Last holiday you went on:
RB: I just returned from a two-week safari in southern Africa. It was as incredible as you would think. Inspiration was everywhere. I took amazing photos that I can’t wait to incorporate as part of our design.
V: What are you reading?
RB: La Seduction. It’s about how the French naturally use seduction in every part of their lives, from politics, to food, to conversation.
V: What do you do for fun? What makes you the most happy?
RB: Design really influences everything I love. I am obsessed with home design and interiors. And entertaining and cooking make me really happy. I make everything from scratch and love the challenge of trying new recipes every meal. Design influence even extends to the plate where I am intent on making everything look cookbook-perfect.
RB: Intelligence is a major turn-on for me. I love competence. And articulate people.
V: If you could give the 18-year-old version of yourself one piece of advice, what would it be?
RB: Take more liberal arts classes in college.
V: What is your favorite accomplishment that you have achieved?
RB: My family’s support for what I’m doing. They have always believed in me and The Shirt and I’m really grateful for them.
