2 Cool Apps for Couples: Pair & Avocado

Two cool apps for couples recently launched, Pair, backed by Y-Combinator, and Avocado, created by a former couple of Googlers. Both offer couples useful tools to enhance their relationships, with time-saving techniques to share everything from affection to chores!

Pair

How It Works:

You start by taking a photo of yourself, and then shooting a quick video on your phone (iOS only for now), that you send with the invite to your significant other. Once they “pair” with you, you’ll be put into the app together. The interface is organized like text messages. You appear on the left, your partner on the right.

Features:

  1. Private text messaging.
  2. Video and photo sharing.
  3. Saved “Moments” section which contains all your shared photos.
  4. Photo retouching with Camera+.
  5. “Thinking of You” button, which is a simple notification (similar to Facebook’s “Poke”).
  6. Drawing feature (so you can doodle for the one you love!).
  7. “Factetime” button at the top activates with a single swipe.
  8. “Thumbkissing” feature shows your partner’s thumbprints whenever they’re touching the screen, and both phones will vibrate if your thumbs are on the same place.
  9. Shared to-do lists.
  10. Reminders for birthdays and anniversaries.

Available on the iPhone free through the App Store.

Avocado

How It Works:

Upload photos of you and your “boo” (as Avocado refers to your partner), and provide your name and email. Couples then have to provide a shared password to connect with one another, which is designed to keep impersonators from logging in and pretending to be someone that they’re not.

Features:

  1. Private text messaging.
  2. Video and photo sharing.
  3. Archive of all shared images, videos and texts.
  4. To-do lists that let you cross items off.
  5. “Quick Notes” feature lets you create saved notes to send to one another.
  6. “Quick Faces” which swap out common emoticons for unique facial expressions of each partner.
  7. Identity verification and advanced encryption, to ensure that users are who they say they are when they sign up.
  8. Select social sharing to Twitter.

Avocado is available on the iPhone and Android mobile devices for $1.99.

Takeaway:

Both apps make technologically engaging with your partner fun and dynamic. So, which one you should you choose? The decision really depends on the couple! While Pair has slightly more unique features (such as “thumbkissing,” photo enhancement and the drawing tool), others may be partial to the classic user journey and interface of Avocado, as well as the expediency offered by its saved sharing features through Quick Notes and Quick Faces. Both are definitely worth a try.
