Condoms on Wheels: Sex for the Greater Good

We Love Lucy

We’d be hard pressed to think of a phrase we like to hear more than “safe sex is a basic human right.” And when that message is delivered by a plaid Volkswagen bus, it’s like music to our ears.

That’s why we were thrilled to read about Lucy, the groovy 1971 VW bus that will be traveling to West Coast college campuses this fall to promote safe sex on behalf of Sir Richard’s, a Venice, CA-based, socially conscious condom company. Available in an array of plaids, Sir Richard’s vegan condoms are stylish and ultra hip, but they aren’t just special due to their funky design and cutting-edge branding; they operate on a “buy-one, give-one model,” meaning that for every condom they sell, one is donated to a community organization based in a country in need, like Zanmi Lasante, a Partners in Health organization in Haiti.

Similar to the Trojan “Good Vibrations” truck, Lucy will zip around to college campuses, assisting participants in Sir Richard’s new Envoy program, which enlists students in promoting safe and responsible sex and raise awareness about the global shortage of contraception and reproductive healthcare. Right on.

We’re so excited about the work and message of Sir Richard’s, and, we have to admit, Sir Richard’s motto, “doing good never felt better,” gives us a little bit of a tingle.
